Those of you that have been into the hentai scene for a while might recognize Shade from Hentai Foundry and other websites dedicated to our hobby. His style is bold, exciting, and incredibly erotic. Even when Shade is drawing non-nude pinups of Power Girl or Black Widow there is always an infusion of sexiness. Like the great cheesecake artists Olivia or Adam Hughes, he manages to make female characters powerful and sultry at the same time.

Not only is Shade an awesome artist, he’s a cool guy too. He agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for us in MPL Toons’ first ever “Artist Spotlight Interview.” See more pics and read the full interview after the jump!

Pen Name: Shade

Please tell us a little about yourself – Do you have formal art training, what led you to become a hentai artist, and how long have you been working in the industry?

I don’t have any formal art training. Around 2002 I decided to try and make a living with my art. I started selling pinups on eBay and then started taking commissions. I’ve been at it ever since trying to improve every day!

Who are your favorite artists?

My favorite comic book artists are Travel Foreman, Paulo Siquiera, Adam Hughes, Ryan Sook, and many, many more.

How would you describe your style?

I’d describe my style as an homage to the comics of the 80s mixed in with cartoons and adult magazine pictorials.

Are your illustrations 100% digital or do you use traditional techniques as well?

I use traditional pencils for my linework and color digitally via Photoshop.

When working on a commissioned piece do you find it hard to work within a genre you are not personally interested in?

I do. I get a lot of commissions that deal with fetishes. I’m a pretty boring guy and don’t really have any fetishes so when I get hired to do a piece that deals with something that the client is very passionate about and I have zero personal emotions invested in the work you really just have to try and manufacture enthusiasm and find something interesting in the concept of the commission to focus on. I get a lot of commissions dealing with muscular women (which I’m not a huge fan of) and furry stuff (not a big fan, either) but I see it as a challenge. If I can make something that the client really enjoys even though I’m not personally into it I see that as a win!

Do you work when you are inspired or do you have a set schedule?

For commissions I just do them in the order in which they were commissioned and paid for, pretty much. I do get inspired to do personal work but I almost feel guilty to draw for myself because I think “I could be finishing up a paid commission for a client right now, but instead I’m drawing a rock monster fighting a dragon for myself!”. I try to draw for myself as often as possible so I don’t get burned out and start actually having contempt for commissions. Thankfully, I personally enjoy drawing smut so when I do I get to share that with my audience who wants it already.

Who is your favorite character to draw?

My favorite character? I don’t have a personal favorite. I have a short attention span and get bored of the same characters VERY QUICKLY which is why I could never do pro work for the big publishers. If I had to draw Spiderman for months on end I’d go insane.

Are there any characters that you want to draw but haven’t had a chance to yet?

Oh yeah! The list is too long to name but if clients gave me free license to just draw whoever I wanted I’ve got a deep list of characters I’d choose from. There’s lots of video game characters, characters from the more adult animes like Kite and Mezzo Forte that I’d love to do. Characters from cartoons like Archer and Ugly Americans… Like I said, there’s a long list! Unfortunately I do get a lot of requests of the same 10-12 characters over and over again.

I’m creating a cast of original characters for my site, Project: Pink XXX, that are sort of spoofs of those typical comic book superheroines that I get commissioned to draw, but that are mine so I’ll be more energized to draw them!

What advice would you give aspiring hentai artists?

Practice, practice, practice and don’t get caught with a dead hooker in your trunk because if you do you have to kill the cop who found it and then you’ve got TWO bodies to bury in the desert… it’s a whole inconvenient mess. But, yeah, practice, practice, practice. Let your natural love for drawing motivate you to improve every day!

*Very* awesome interview! I really hope to see more of these as I find myself ever curious about so many artists behind the image. Shade here seems like a pretty laid-back guy and it reflects all too well in his work. As you so finely put it, he really does make the girls look simultaneously powerful & sultry. Not too common when it comes to hentai (for the most part).

Excellent spotlight and wonderful choice of pictures, man.
